The Killer Angels and the Battle of Gettysburg Essay examples -- Essay
When an author writes a book he has a message that he is trying to get across to the reader. This message is called a theme. In The Killer Angels Shaaraââ¬â¢s theme was freedom for the slaves. The Northerners truly believed that the slaves deserved to be free, and their desire to set slaves free was the cause of the Civil War. Just before the Battle of Gettysburg, Colonel Lawrence Chamberlain of the 20th Maine gave a speech to a group of mutineers. He told them that the war in which they were fighting was unlike any war in history. The war in which they were fighting was not for money, property or power. It was a war to set other men free. After the battle began, Sergeant Tom Chamberlain asked a group of prisoners why they were fighting. They gave no answer, but asked him the same question. Sergeant Chamberlain answered, ââ¬Å"To free the slaves, of course.â⬠The South, however, was against freeing the slaves. The entire Civil War, whether the people were for or against the idea, was about freedom. The Killer Angels was informative, very fascinating and I liked it. I liked the book because I learned many things from it. Iââ¬â¢d never thought much about the importance of the Battle of Gettysburg until I read The Killer Angels. From this book I learned many things. I learned that the Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the Civil War. Prior to Gettysburg, the South had won most major battles. At Gettysburg, however, the North gained itââ¬â¢s...

How Does John Stienbeck Create Tension in Chapter 2 Essay
Chapter two consists with George and Lennie starting work at a new farm. They meet the other ranch workers and the bossââ¬â¢s aggressive son Curley, and also his wife who comes into the bunk house and flirts with George an Lennie. As soon as Lennie glances at Curleyââ¬â¢s wife, he is instantly attracted to her and George is worried by this. George makes Lennie promise to meet him by the pool if there is any trouble. For example , in weed when Lennie felt the little girls dress. Another character they meet is slim, he is in charge of the horses and also he is a man with natural authority. There are two separate styles of writing in of mice and men; descriptive style and dialogue. The dialogue in ââ¬ËOf Mice and Menââ¬â¢ is very realistic. Steinbeck tried to imitate the way the ranch workers spoke. He could have had George say (page35)ââ¬â¢ I have seen women like this before, but I have never seen one as worse as a woman that has been put in jail.ââ¬â¢ As it is , he h as George say ââ¬Ë I seenââ¬â¢ em poison before , but I never seen no piece of jail bait worse than her.ââ¬â¢ The language of Steinbeckââ¬â¢s characters is written down in a way that allows you almost to hear the characters speaking and also their actions. Steinbeck spells words that reflects how illiterate some of the characters are. He also spells words like that, to reflect how they sound in the mouths of ordinary people not how the words appear in a dictionary. One of the techniques Steinbeck used was to leave the beginning and end off words. For example Steinbeck writes ââ¬Å"anâ⬠for ââ¬Å"andâ⬠, ââ¬Å"jusâ⬠for ââ¬Å"justâ⬠, ââ¬Å"gonnaâ⬠for ââ¬Å"going to do something..â⬠Steinbeck tends to start a chapter in a descriptive style, he often incorporates the natural beauty of the setting and the fertility of the land. (chapter 1) ââ¬Ë a few miles south of Soledad, the Salinas River drops in close to hillside bank.ââ¬â¢ whereas in this chapter, a description of the bunk house is given, it lacks comfort. ââ¬Ë Inside the walls were whitewash ed and the floor unpainted.ââ¬â¢ This is a starch contrast with the previous scene. The detailed description of the setting is always the place in which the action happens. In the novel tension is created through a series of ominous signs. I have noticed a particular order in which it is created in . Anger , then a calmer atmosphere which is then broken by anger , rage or confusion. Tension, anxiety and rage is created when Curley ( the bossââ¬â¢s son) enters the room. ââ¬Ëhe glanced coldlyââ¬â¢ this suggests that he is unfriendly and a threat. ââ¬Ë he stiffened his fistsâ⬠¦his glance was at once calculating and pugnacious.ââ¬â¢ when Curley stiffened his firsts, this showed that he was looking for a fight , the readers already know that he is an aggressive character and confronts people with this. ââ¬Ë He hates big guys. Heââ¬â¢s alla time picking scraps with big guys. Kind of like heââ¬â¢s mad atââ¬â¢em because he aint a big guy.ââ¬â¢ The readers suddenly realise that there would be a future problem with Lennie and Curley, further on in the novel. Curley seems set on proving that he is a big man, in all but size. His success in the past as a boxer is an obsession, so every person Curley meets is a possible opponent. He sees life and everyone he faces as a competition. Curleyââ¬â¢s authority on the ranch triggers tension as most of the ranch hands are frightened of him and do not want to confront him as there would be trouble. During chapter two, my sympathy fell towards the stable buck, Crook. He is a victim of racial prejudice. the way Candy gossiped about Crook to George and Lennie was unjust ,they would normally refer to Crook as ââ¬Ëthe niggerââ¬â¢. Nowadays that is a racial offence. They way Candy said that Crook has no respect he was the lowest of the low. ââ¬ËNice fella too. Got a crooked back where a horse kicked him. The boss gives him hell when heââ¬â¢s mad. But the stable buck donââ¬â¢t give a damn about that.ââ¬â¢ Despite Crook being discriminated against, he is a proud, independent and intelligent as he reads a lot. But none of these admirable features stop the boss from giving him ââ¬Ëhellââ¬â¢. As he is not a respected character and he has no authority.

An Analysis of the Essay of Malcolm X as a Racist
An Analysis of the Essay of Malcolm X as a Racist Malcolm was a racist, violent Black Man. He has been an anti-white all through his previous life as he had confessed, and has remained the same even after his pilgrimage to Mecca. His thoughts and emotions deny the White man, and he still sees them as hypocrites who try to benefit from the Blacks, using Negroes as tools to enrich their lives. The influence he had received during his past years from Elijah Muhammad, and his learning of the history of the White man had so much effect on him. Although he had professed to witness to have understood the real teachings of Islam, his ideas and opinions of the Whites did not change. His preaching still focused on the Black mans plight, as he had done when he served as the Minister of the Nation of Islam. Malcolm says, I didnt miss a single opportunity to tell the truth about the crimes, the evils and the indignities that are suffered by the black man in America (pg 351). He simply generalizes all Whites to be evil and tells how the White men had oppressed them. He doesnt seem to realize that Whites nowadays are different from who they were before in the past. He was telling the truth, of the cruel history of the Whites, but the truth didnt apply to all Whites as he thought. If he had witnessed the spirit of true brotherhood during his pilgrimage in Mecca, shouldnt he be more open -minded, have more sympathy and a magnanimous heart towards the White people? His speeches caused the blacks to hate the Whites and commit violent crimes against them. New York Citys press was highly upset about a recent killing in Harlem of a White woman, for which many were blaming me at least indirectly (pg 365). This shows that Malcolm was a great orator, who could unite the blacks, bur it would have been better off if he had thought more to love one another, to become one as brothers, as written in the Quran. His Blood Brothers only consisted of Negroes. If we all are, as he says, the descendants of Gods creation, why cant Whites as well be a part of his Blood Brother? Malcolm actually says that there is only a minority of brotherly white people. Yes, I have been convinced that some American whites do want to help cure the rampant racism which is now the path to destroy this country! (Pg. 365) He has no sympathy for other Whites than the White Muslims, and doesnt even try to compromise with them. As much as he defended the rights of the Blacks, and preached of the Whites historical crimes, he denied the Whites and couldnt get out of his racial prejudice. How could he actually say that there was only a minority of brotherly white people, when he, himself, didnt even bother to socialize or integrate with the Whites in America, to get to know each of them better? Muslims of white complexions were the only people whom Malcolm considered as brothers. He did not accept other Whites as his brothers; he was still a racist to them. Malcolm denies the White people, and before accepting them as human beings, he first perceives their white skin color and starts to hold a racial prejudice against them. He lies the responsibility of the Black mans sufferings on the White man unconditionally, that it is their entire fault

Freud psychosexual stages of development Research Proposal
Freud psychosexual stages of development - Research Proposal Example The mouth, anus and genital regions are the three major zones that Freud identified. The theory looks at the effects of sexual pleasure drive on a personââ¬â¢s psyche. A person cannot proceed to the next stage if the current stageââ¬â¢s developmental conflicts have not been resolved. This paper seeks to analyze the progression of a child through the five stages that result into a healthy or unhealthy person. The oral stage is the first Freud stage begins when the child is born up to when it is about one and a half years. The oral cavity or rather the mouth is the main focus of libido energy. The child accepts anything that comes close to its mouth and has great pleasure in sucking (Phillip, 2002: p224). The child also expects to be held, cared for and mothered. If a child doesnââ¬â¢t receive these services from the mother or the services were denied before the stage was over, the child is likely to get frustrated and will grow up to be pessimist, envious, sarcastic and suspicious. If the child on the other hand got an excess of these needs, it will grow to be optimistic, gullible and will always admire the individual in him. Weaning brings the stage to an end (Theo, 2000: p1). This is the second stage that takes place between one and a half years to three years. The erogenous zone at this stage is the anus and the childââ¬â¢s focus is on the retention and elimination of faeces. The parentââ¬â¢s child takes quite sometime in training the child on toilet issues trying to ensure that the child learns to control its anal stimulations. A child that doesnââ¬â¢t receive enough training in the field is more likely to be obsessed on perfection, cleanliness, meticulous, etc. On the other hand, a child who receives excess training is more likely to be messy, careless, reckless, disorganized, defiant, etc (Phillip, 2002: p224). The third stage occurs between the third and the sixth year. The erogenous zone at

The Concept of the Ecological Footprint Assignment
The Concept of the Ecological Footprint - Assignment Example At the same time, communities and society need to grow in their concern and understanding about the environment while providing more access to resources that provide sustainability and lower numbers in ecological footprints. There are several concepts and factors that are attributed to the ecological footprint. The main concept is based on the behaviors, social expectations, and trends that are within a culture. The amount of knowledge that one has about the environment also creates a different approach to the ecological footprint that is used. The first factor that determines an ecological footprint is based on the capacity that a human has to use different types of resources and how this directly impacts the environment. The main concept that has to be looked into is based on the amount of resource consumption that an individual uses per year. As economic growth continues to emerge and as rising material standards rise in demand are also problems with ecological deterioration. The more in which one demands to have specific resources available, the more it contributes to environmental changes as a use of resources on the planet (Wackernagel, Rees, 1996). Even though it is required that each individual uses a specific amount of resources, there is also a rising concern with the way in which these resources are impacting the environment. If the ecological resources that are available continue to rise, then it will create unsustainable communities. The first places that are affected are urban settings, which require substantial resources to work with agriculture and to produce resources for different nations. If this increases, then the percentage of resources needed also increase. At the same time, the environmental needs donââ¬â¢t match the number of resources that are needed within a community.Ã

Current Events and U.S. Diplomacy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Current Events and U.S. Diplomacy - Essay Example Thus a cold war erupted between the U.S. and USSR which eventually came to an end with the help of doctrinal regimes implemented by Reagan (Fischer, 1997). Define presidential doctrine and summarize the regional or global events during the Cold War leading up to the formation of the Reagan doctrine. Presidential doctrine defines the policies, procedures, reforms and initiatives taken by a countryââ¬â¢s president which are intended to enhance global position of the nation and to achieve greatest good for citizens of own country as well as those across the globe. Before arrival of President Reagan, communism had become common and superpowers like Soviet Union were suppressing the Third World countries in attempt to invade them. The Soviet and the Vietnamese led various Marxist movements which depressed capitalism and eventually forced the entry of Cuban armies and Soviet troops into different territories including Angola, Cambodia and Afghanistan. These countries did not have suffic ient powers to hold the forces and hence turned to other countries for help. The U.S. which believed itself to be the savior and leader nation for all decided to intervene and rescue these countries through Reagan doctrine. This doctrine created waves of passion across nations and gave boost to conservatism in America (Carpenter, 2012). Describe the Cold War relationship that existed between USSR and the U.S. before Reagan doctrine was announced. Before Reagan, there were only two prevailing superpowers, the U.S. and the USSR, which considered their coexistence to be catastrophic and hence wanted to triumph over the other. The perceived equality of power of both nations had led everyone to believe that the two countries pose threats to each other. The mutual suspicion rose amongst the two parties and past experiences of World Wars led them to believe that dangers exist. Soviet Union was spreading communism which challenged the survival of capitalism in the U.S. Reagan rejected the i dea of control over European nations by the Soviet Union and claimed it to be unfair for USSR to exercise its rights outside its jurisdictional system and boundaries. Thus Cold War broke and Reagan introduced the Reagan Doctrine to stop communism by supporting and providing arms to the rebels and freedom fighters in Third World countries for self-defense (Katz, 1991). Describe the relationship that currently exists between the U.S. and USSR. The relationship between United States and the Soviet Union enhanced eventually after the Reagan doctrine. The leaders of Soviet Union realized soon that they essentially need the support of capitalist countries in order to flourish in the economic and business world. The greatest capitalist power is the U.S. and hence USSR has been keeping stable relationship with it and has signed various pacts to ensure peaceful relationships in field of politics, science and technology (Cox, 1990). The recent patterns of American-Soviet relationships are inc lined towards development in the fields of economic trade growth and mutually collaborative effort in scientific expansion. Describe the effect that the Reagan doctrine has had on regional or global affairs since the time when it was announced during the Cold War. When Reagan doctrine was introduced, the Cold War came to an end and relationships between U.S. and USSR were also improved. The Soviet Union retreated from all the territories and the world moved towards democratic and harmonious terms. Moscow no longer targeted
